If you are interested in learning about, and hearing directly from, Maya people (not just people saying they are Maya) then definitely head on over to Indigenously, a newsletter from award-winning Native journalist Jenni Monet.
In the latest dispatch, titled Weyano’one, Monet reports from Belize, home to a large number of Maya people. As the March 4, 2022, post notes. “Weyano'one” means “We are here” in one of the many Maya languages, and they are still living on their homelands.
“Today, more than seven million Maya live in Mesoamerica across five countries: Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador,” Monet writes. “They are descendants of master builders and expert astronomers - today's speakers of some thirty Mayan languages shared across a common base: the sun, the stars, and corn - the elements of Mayan survival.”
