The ghost of Jimmie Bob Durham continues to haunt Indian Country, long after he fled the United States to avoid being prosecuted under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act.
His death on November 17, 2021, in fact allowed him to be reborn as a "Cherokee" artist in the pages of The New York Times. Rather than reporting (and confirming) Durham's false claims of belonging to the Cherokee people, the paper of record instead gave him space for legitimacy -- through a person from a completely different tribal community.
